GUADIX´ History
**************************

Guadix is one of the biggest villages that we can find in the province of Granada.

It has more or less 19 000 inhabitants and an area of 317 km^2.

It is one of the eldest human settlement in Spain. It was founded by Octavio Augusto as a settlement for the veterans of the I and II legions. IN this roman era it was called "Julia Gemella Acci", and from here comes its family name "Accitano".

The name of the village comes from muslims, when the town was called "Wadi Ash", arabization of the name Acci.

In the era of the Granada´s kingdom, Wadi Ash was one of its 33 fortified cities. This one had an Alcazaba.

In this city exists a neighborhood made of caves which were perforated long ago. A huge amount of them are being rehabilitated and are used as settlements for turists as "apartacuevas".

The caves are a later creation to the muslim era, their origin must be sought immediately after the capture of Granada in 1492 by the Catholic Kings.

The excavations in the hills were practised by main master builders. The technique consisted of the "puncture" of the hill in order that this ones were not ruined.
